Changing a Chrysler PCM in a Few Simple Steps

When you first realize that the powertrain control module (PCM) on your vehicle is bad, the first thing that often comes to mind is the dreaded expense that will be incurred for a replacement. However, if you are willing to make the repairs yourself you can minimize the expense and make the whole ordeal much less painful. The information that follows will explain the process in a few simple steps so people who are not professional mechanics will feel less apprehensive about it. In fact, individuals who are skillful enough to change their own oil can likely pull it off.

The particular vehicle used to develop these steps was a 2000 Sebring but the process will be similar in many other vehicles as well when it comes time to change a Chrysler PCM. Diagnostic code 601 means the change is needed, although at times the computer can go bad and not give a code.

The first step one should take in the process of replacing a Chrysler ECM is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Next comes unplugging the wiring harnesses from the module which is located near the top of the engine compartment on the driver’s side of the vehicle. There are two of them and they are held in place by clips on either side that are red in color. Simply slide the clips up, squeeze inward and pull them out. Once they are removed, the module is in plain view. It is secured to the vehicle by two 8mm bolts. Remove the bolts and lift the module out. Installing the replacement is as simple as sliding it in place, replacing the bolts and reconnecting the two wiring harnesses.

Carcomputer Exchange can provide a Chrysler ECM at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Providing them the vehicle identification number and the mileage will ensure that, when the new module is received, it will be ready to install. The result is a part that is as good as new but at a fraction of the cost.
