ECM Cloning: Programmed (Cloned) or Virginized ECMs

What ECM Cloning Copies From Your Original Module

ECM cloning copies the software, calibration, VIN, and security data from your original engine control module onto a remanufactured module, so the replacement runs as your car's own computer. The cloned unit carries the original's VIN and security identity, so the original keys continue to work without a key relearn.

What cloning copies:

  • VIN, so the module matches your vehicle
  • Immobilizer and key data, so your factory keys keep working
  • The engine software and calibration
  • Coding, including SCN where it applies to Mercedes

Programmed (Cloned) vs Virginized ECM: Which One You Need

The Mercedes cloning listings offer programmed (cloned) and virginized routes where supported. The choice depends on the exact module and whether the original data can be recovered.

At Car Computer Exchange, we clone and virginize Mercedes engine control modules for DIY owners and independent shops, remanufacturing each unit at our Raleigh, North Carolina facility.

Programmed (cloned). Send us your original and we copy its VIN, immobilizer, key data, and coding onto the remanufactured ECM. It installs plug-and-play, your keys keep working, and no Star, Xentry, or SCN coding is needed.

Virginized. We reset the module to a factory-fresh state, so no original is needed and it ships from stock. It is not plug-and-play: a shop must flash, code, personalize, and activate it with Star or Xentry before the car will start. If a module cannot be virginized, we contact you and usually clone it instead.

How Send-In ECM Cloning Works

Send-in cloning starts after you order. You ship us your original module with a prepaid label, we copy its VIN, immobilizer, and key data onto the remanufactured unit, and ship it back plug-and-play.

Steps for a cloned order:

  1. Order the module for your vehicle, such as the 2007 Mercedes C230 ECM.
  2. Ship us your original ECM with the prepaid label we provide.
  3. We copy your VIN, immobilizer, key data, and coding onto the remanufactured unit.
  4. Install the module you get back and drive. Your original keys still work.

Once your original reaches our Raleigh, North Carolina facility, we clone it, test it, and ship it back. Cloning beats a plain used-module swap because Mercedes ECMs are VIN-locked: a module that does not carry your VIN and key data will not start the car.

What You Get With a Cloned or Virginized ECM

The 2007 C230 offer includes a remanufactured ECM, cloned or virginized as selected, reconditioned and tested in Raleigh, North Carolina. Other Mercedes engine control modules have their own offers and service routes.

The warranty is limited, parts-only and nontransferable. A shop may perform the initial Star or Xentry setup required for a virginized ECM. That permission applies to the required initial setup, not to later reprogramming or modifications; the other warranty and core conditions still apply. Authorized returns within 60 days of purchase remain subject to applicable fees and exclusions.

Find Your Mercedes ECM by Model and Year

The cloning catalog currently covers Mercedes engine control modules across the model lineup, matched by model, year, and the part number on your original unit. Mercedes ECMs are VIN-locked and usually need bench programming or a virgin reset, unlike many domestic ECMs we program from a VIN alone.

To find yours, browse Mercedes cloning by model and open your year, from C-Class sedans to the 2004 Mercedes CL500 ECM and the S-Class and SL lineups. Match the model, year, and part number on your module so the clone fits exactly. If you are unsure which listing fits, use the homepage vehicle picker.

FAQs

Will my original keys still work after ECM cloning?

Yes, on the cloned route. Cloning copies your VIN, immobilizer, and key data onto the remanufactured module, so your existing keys keep working with no key relearn and no dealer visit. The cloned module carries the same security identity as your original, which is why the car and keys recognize it as soon as you install it.

What happens if my ECM cannot be virginized?

Not every module can be reset to a virgin, factory-fresh state. If Car Computer Exchange determines that yours cannot be virginized, we contact you before doing any work and usually clone it instead. Cloning copies your original data onto the remanufactured unit, so you still get a plug-and-play module without a dealer programming session.

Can you clone an ECM with water or electrical damage?

Cloning requires recoverable data from your original module. If that data cannot be recovered, a virginized replacement may be an option only if the exact module supports virginization. That route requires shop flashing, coding, personalization, and activation with Star or Xentry before the car will start.

Do I need a dealer, Star, or Xentry after a cloned ECM?

No, not for a cloned module. A programmed (cloned) ECM installs plug-and-play, with no Star, Xentry, or SCN coding and no key relearn. A virginized module is different: it ships unprogrammed, so a shop with Star or Xentry has to flash, code, personalize, and activate it before the car will start.

Which vehicles can you clone an ECM for?

The online cloning catalog currently covers Mercedes engine control modules by model and year. For other makes, enter your year, make, and model on the homepage to find a VIN-programmed replacement or a send-in repair instead, or browse a make catalog such as the Ford PCM and ECM catalog.
