2005 Ford Escape 2.3L PCM: The Engine Computer Alone, No Key Included
Car Computer Exchange sells this refurbished 2005 Ford Escape 2.3L PCM on its own, without a key. It is the powertrain control module, also called the ECM, the ECU or the engine control module.
The unit replaces the computer in your Escape outright. You order, then send us the VIN. The module is programmed to that VIN and goes through our 13-point quality check before shipping. A self-addressed envelope comes in the box, and after the swap your old computer rides back to us in it as the core.
Check the Engine and Fuel Type on Your Escape
This listing is for a 2005 Escape with the 2.3L four-cylinder. Two checks narrow the application before we confirm the match:
- 2.3L or 3.0L. Gas 2005 Escapes came with either the 2.3L four-cylinder or the 3.0L V6. V6 owners need the separate 2005 Ford Escape 3.0L PCM.
- Gas or Hybrid. The 2005 Escape Hybrid also runs a 2.3L engine. The gas 2.3L carries engine code Z and the Hybrid carries code H, in the 8th character of the VIN. This listing does not state Hybrid coverage, so call us before ordering if your VIN shows an H.
Other years and engines are on our Ford Escape PCM page.
This Listing or the 2.3L PCM With Key
We list the 2005 Escape 2.3L engine computer two ways: this one on its own, and the 2005 Ford Escape 2.3L PCM with Key, which pairs the same application with a key. Both fit the same engine. The key package is the difference.
The key matters on this Escape because of how Ford built it. On the 2005 to 2007 Escape, the anti-theft system (PATS) is run by the PCM itself, so the key codes live in the engine computer rather than in the instrument cluster. The cluster-pairing procedure used on other Ford and Lincoln models does not apply here.
Which of the two 2.3L listings suits your Escape depends on your keys and on what this listing needs at installation. Phone us with the VIN before you order, and ask for the installation instructions that apply, rather than assuming either package covers the anti-theft step. Our used ECU compatibility guide makes the same point from the other side: on a Ford of this era, the engine computer and its keys are tied together.
Replacement, Repair or a New Dealer PCM
This refurbished listing. The unit arrives set to your VIN. Your original computer stays in the Escape until the replacement is in hand, then ships to us as the core. Send it back in good rebuildable condition within 21 days and the lifetime warranty is active.
Send-in repair. A repair service fixes your original module, so the Escape sits without its computer while the unit is away. We have no repair listing for the 2005 Escape; what we sell here is a replacement.
A new unit from a Ford dealer. New modules are not something we sell. Ford's own procedure has a new PCM's vehicle ID (VID) block programmed at installation, so a dealer unit still needs that work done for the Escape.

Every unit is programmed & tested in our facility in Cary NC
CarComputerExchange fully rebuilds and tests ALL computers. We are the ONLY seller that runs each computer through a computer aided vehicle simulator that tests every circuit in the module. Other companies run limited tests.
Most companies run limited tests. Some online stores simply repaint old units and sell without testing. Don't fall for the CHEAPER option.
Our testing & rebuilding process starts with a deep visual evaluation of the circuit board and all the electronic components. From water or acid corrosion, to fire or burn damage, we pay attention to every detail. We also scan the ECU memory or CPU to make sure that it is working properly.
We then test the ECU's with our proprietary electronic lab equipment on our bench, which emulates the car's engine to ensure accuracy in every diagnosis.
