What to Expect at Installation

On the 2006 Explorer 4.6L, Ford's anti-theft system (PATS) is run by the instrument cluster, not the engine computer. The cluster checks the key's code at every start and enables the PCM.

Ford's service procedure for this truck calls for a parameter reset of the cluster and the PCM whenever a new PCM is installed, so the two modules are paired to each other again. It runs on a diagnostic tool, and Ford's steps tell the technician not to erase the key codes, so it works with the keys you already have. It is a pairing job, not new-key programming.
