Lexus ES300 and LS400 Engine Control Modules, Programmed to Your VIN

At Car Computer Exchange, we remanufacture and ship VIN-programmed Lexus engine control modules for the ES300 and LS400, each tested on a vehicle simulator and backed by a free lifetime warranty. The product grid above lists every Lexus ECU, ECM, and PCM we currently stock, organized by model.

If your scan tool points to the engine control module and your Lexus is an ES300 or LS400, the matching unit is in the grid above, remanufactured and ready to install. We have shipped pre-programmed modules to more than 150,000 customers since 2011.

What Lexus Calls Its Engine Computer: ECU, ECM, and PCM

Lexus and its supplier Denso label the engine computer an ECM, short for engine control module. The terms ECU (electronic control unit), engine computer, and engine control module all name the same part. A PCM, or powertrain control module, is the combined unit that runs both the engine and the transmission, while a TCM controls the transmission alone.

Most Lexus engine control modules carry a Denso part number in the 89661, 89666, or 89981 family. You do not need the part number to order. We match the correct module to your Lexus by year, model, and VIN.

Signs of a Failing Lexus ECM and the Codes to Check First

A failing Lexus ECM almost always trips the check engine light, usually alongside one or more of these symptoms:

  • Check engine light with internal module fault codes
  • Engine misfires, rough idle, or stalling
  • A drop in fuel economy with no other cause
  • The engine cranks but will not start

Pull the diagnostic trouble codes with an OBD-II scanner before you replace anything. Codes that point at the module itself include P0600 (serial communication), P0601 (internal memory checksum), and P0606 (processor fault). If one of these returns after a scan-tool clear and you have already checked the sensors and wiring, the engine control module is the likely cause.

On older models the failure is physical. The engine computers in 1990s LS400 and SC430 units develop leaking internal capacitors that cause unstable idle and intermittent stalling. A battery-cable reset can clear a minor glitch, but a module that fails its own self-test has to be replaced.

VIN-Programmed, Plug-and-Play, and Backed by a Free Lifetime Warranty

Every Lexus ECM we ship is pre-programmed to your VIN with the latest factory software, so it installs without a dealer visit or a separate programming fee. Lexus ties the engine control module to the immobilizer and key transponder. An unprogrammed module will crank the engine but will not start it. We sync your VIN, key, and anti-theft data before the module leaves our Raleigh facility.

Before it ships, each module runs through a 13-point quality check on a computer-aided vehicle simulator that loads your Lexus engine, transmission, and anti-theft parameters under load. The unit carries a free lifetime warranty: return your old core in the prepaid box within 21 days and the warranty activates. A core is the old module you are replacing. If the new module does not solve the problem within 60 days, our money-back guarantee covers a refund or exchange.

To find your module, enter your year, make, and model in the vehicle picker on the Car Computer Exchange homepage. For more import coverage, browse Toyota ECM modules, Honda ECM modules, or Ford PCM modules.

FAQs

What is the difference between a Lexus ECU, ECM, and PCM?

They describe the same family of part. Lexus uses ECM, engine control module, in its OEM part numbers, while ECU (electronic control unit) is the general industry term. A PCM, powertrain control module, manages the engine and the transmission together, where an ECM runs the engine alone. Whichever term you search, we match the module to your Lexus by VIN.

What are the signs of a failing Lexus ECU?

The most common sign is a check engine light that keeps returning after you clear it. Drivers also report rough idling, stalling, misfires, poor fuel economy, or an engine that cranks without starting. If you have already replaced the sensors and ignition parts and the fault stays, the engine control module is the likely source.

Does a replacement Lexus ECM need to be programmed?

Yes. A Lexus engine control module has to be programmed to your VIN and matched to the immobilizer and key, or the engine will crank but not start. We program every module to your vehicle before it ships, so there is no dealer visit and no separate programming charge. Most installs are plug-and-play.

How much does it cost to replace a Lexus ECU?

A dealer replacement runs about $1,500 to $2,600 once you add the OEM part, programming, and labor. A remanufactured, pre-programmed module costs a fraction of that, typically a few hundred dollars, and installs with no programming charge. Enter your year, make, and model for current pricing on your exact vehicle.

Which Lexus models do you carry engine computers for?

We currently stock engine control modules for the Lexus ES300 and the Lexus LS400. Each ships pre-programmed to your VIN with a free lifetime warranty. If you do not see your model, enter your year, make, and model on our homepage and our team can check current availability and sourcing options.
