Believe it or not, some people have no idea that there were television car commercials in 1949. This videos features just such a commercial for the 1949 Lincoln line.
As with other television programs at the time, the commercial is entirely in black and white and a bit fuzzy around the edges of the screen. In 1949, the focus of both buyers and car manufacturers was home and comfort. Home ownership was believed to be a huge sign of success and critical to a happier overall life. A car, as a result, needed to be seen as an extension of this idea. The car also needed to be considered “distinctive.” Vehicles in the 1949 Lincoln line were advertised as luxurious, convenient, comfortable and personalized to individual taste.
