Whether you like black-and-white TV, classic commercials, musicals or animation, or something else entirely, you will probably fall in love with this classic 1954 DeSoto car commercial!
The commercial begins with an animated black-and-white musical bit in which a newspaper reporter standing on a city street corner starts singing that the big news is the DeSoto. Soon after, he is picked up by a female driver who starts singing about the car’s fantastic automatic shifting ability that makes the ride better than any manual car around.
As with many commercials from the time, this one eventually reveals that car buyers were interested in vehicles that seemed to mimic the sleekness and power of airplanes. Informative news-style ads also held great appeal. After the musical bit ended, the commercial immediately switched to live action with a narrator outlining the superior performance of an automatic vehicle equipped with a “Power Flight” transmission.
