This happens to be the country’s largest class action lawsuit ever. VW is also making history with respect to the number of vehicles it plans to buy back. Consumers may recall that certain VW cars were sold in the US with a “defeat device.” This was software, in diesel engines, that could change the outcome of emissions performance tests. The goal was to engineer passing test results.
After all, how many cars could they sell if they failed emissions tests?! VW pushed these vehicles on the American public through a huge marketing campaign that trumped the vehicle’s low emission counts. This device could be found in US cars only, and included Audi A3, Jetta, Bettle, Golf, and Passat. VW even admitted there are 11 million cars worldwide that had the device installed. Imagine that. No doubt, VW car sales have been affected in America and Europe. Oddly enough, China seems to be unaffected. Hats off to the watchdog groups that keep the watch over such things.
