Benny Hill is still a classic to watch! As an English comedian, his comedy delighted the entire world. He had a style that was refreshing and non-vulgar. That could be what’s missing from today’s world of comedy. On the other hand, comedy is not a science but an art! And that’s what makes it so subjective.
What’s funny to one person might make another person cringe. Those who have analyzed comedy (which is a non-science and therefore impossible to analyze) liken comedy as looking at something out of the corner of your eye. If you look at comedy directly, the funniness will disappear.
So, we laugh because we’re able to recognize a person’s cleverness, which makes us feel clever because we “got” the joke. It makes you step back and pause.
